The Bible

The foundational principle of the Christian faith is the supreme authority of the Word of God. If one cannot have faith in the Bible as God's infallible (without error) Word, then they have no basis for any solid teaching on salvation, God, Christian living, worship, or eternity. The Bible is the source of understanding for all the things that a Christian holds dear; it is the source of all truth. This is true of both the Old and the New Testaments.

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.
Psalm 119:160

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
John 17:17

The truth of the Word needs to guide us on a daily basis; that is why David said:

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105

There is only one way to allow His Word to be our light in time of darkness: we are to meditate, or focus, on His Word continuously according to Psalm 119:148. We need to study the Word to show ourself approved before God, as Paul had said. So much so, in fact, that we should be able to say:

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalm 119:11

Unfortunately, there are many people that have allowed the Bible to offend them. This is a very dangerous position to be in. The Psalmist said that a person who loves God's law will have peace and nothing will offend them (Psalm 119:165). Even though the truth can hurt, that does not stop it from being truth. The following would be an appropriate analogy. A man driving his car sees a sign that the bridge is out ahead. The man says to himself, "I don't believe that the bridge is out." He continues down the road just as he had before and suddenly drives off the end of the bridge! The man could have avoided his downfall, but he was unwilling to accept truth at face value. Because of his own pride, he was more interested in challenging the authority of the one who placed the sign.

You might be wondering how we can know that the Bible is true with any certainty. Like any other historical record that needs investigation, we are forced to consider how the Bible holds up against other recorded history and archaelogical and geographical findings. The fact of the matter is that the Bible has led to and confirmed the discovery of a great deal of modern archaelogical findings. Many archaelogists have used the Bible as a type of road map to unearth cities that have been destroyed or gone to ruin thousands of years ago. Initially, some historians rejected the Bible as a clear historical record because of some seemingly conflicting finds, only to have them clarified years later after finding that the interpretations of scripture or archaelogical evidence and writings were inaccurate. The Bible has never been proven to be wrong in any area of archaelogy or geography!

Beyond just archaelogy, the Bible has led to many scientific discoveries in astronomy, as well as medical and horticultural science. For example, Job recorded that the earth was a sphere and was suspended in mid-air thousands of years before Columbus rejected the notion that the earth was flat. The Bible records that the stars of heaven are virtually innumerable while early scientific thought progressed from saying that the stars were in the hundreds of thousands, to millions, to billions. Now we realize that the number of stars is far surpassed the billions and trillions. Also, the Bible has recorded that the life of the flesh is in the blood, but for many years doctors practiced the bleeding of patients to rid "diseased blood". According to history, that is how George Washington died. We now know that blood heals the body and we now perform blood transfusions.

The Jews had the best hygiene, dietary, and farming practices of any people because of the law that God handed down through Moses that guided all of their practices. They did not eat pork, shellfish, or the blood of animals. We now know that pork is not the purest of meat, shellfish is high in cholesterol, and meat that is not prepared properly can trigger sickness and disease, including salmonella. Additionally, they were the first people known to practice a system of crop rotation which allows the ground to be replenished of the nitrogen that is found in enriched soil. They did this because God had given them strict guidelines for farming practices in the law of Moses.

One is forced to ask himself: if the Bible has been right in all of these areas and has never been proven wrong throughout history despite the attempts of many evil men and women to suppress and destroy it, what does the Bible have to say about the future? The truth of the matter is that the Bible has prophesied about our very generation and the things that will happen in the near future. The prophecy most central to the fulfillment of all of the Bible's prophecies is that of the rebirth of the nation of Israel. In 70 A.D., the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem and caused the Jewish people to be scattered all over the world, effectively destroying Israel. The Bible had spoken of its impending destruction and its ultimate re-emergence as a nation. Israel did not exist as a country for almost two thousand years, but in 1948 they stepped forward to declare to the world that Israel had been reborn. Never before had any country in history been destroyed and remained so before eventually coming back together under the same exact name. It was nothing short of a miracle! But the Bible had foretold of the occurence of all these things thousands of years ago! No other book has such power.

There are many other prophecies in the Bible concerning what will happen to Israel and the rest of the world during our time. One has to consider that if the Bible has been right in all of these areas despite its critics, maybe it is time that we pick it up, dust if off, and explore its truth!
